About Crankin Surf

Where It All Started

Crankin Surf began in Newcastle, Australia in July 2014 — not in a shaping bay, but behind a camera. Craig Tonks started the brand as a surf photography venture, chasing waves and capturing the raw energy of the Newcastle surf scene. It was a passion project rooted in a deep love for the ocean and the culture that surrounds it.

From the Lens to the Shaping Bay

Soon that passion evolved. In July 2015, Craig turned his hands to shaping, crafting boards by hand right here in Newcastle. This came out of necessity, being unable to find the right board. Every board is shaped with the same attention to detail and authentic connection to surfing that started the whole journey. There's no big factory, no shortcuts — just Craig, the foam, working from home with years of experience reading waves.

Growing Into Surf Accessories

As the brand grew, so did the range. Crankin Surf expanded into surf accessories — fins then leg ropes, products designed by a surfer, for surfers. The focus has always been on well priced quality gear that actually performs in the water, chosen and tested by someone who surfs them.
